The Odyssey Millennium Project in Belfast is one of 28 Landmark Millennium Projects to benefit from major funding allocations form the Millennium Commission.

The Odyssey Arena was opened in November 2000 and was the venue for the last major address of President Clinton to the people of Northern Ireland in December 2000.

PROJECT STATEMENT

"The original idea of the Odyssey Millennium scheme was motivated by the growing awareness that there are a number of important gaps that exist in the provision for education and sport in Northern Ireland and tourism in Belfast City. The availability of Millennium funding was identified at an early stage as offering an enormous opportunity to develop a single, all embracing, landmark project that was capable of moving forward the sporting and educational development of Northern Ireland whilst at the same time achieving significant social and economic goals.

Working closely with the Consarc Design Group in Belfast, Marshall Haines + Barrow are the architects for the 10,000 seat indoor arena which forms part of the overall Odyssey development; which also includes a Science Centre, Imax cinema, and pavilion building.

The indoor arena is of international standard capable of playing a role in the sports events strategy of Northern Ireland and in providing family entertainment not previously available."
